CAT HEALTH & MORE

Our Mission Statement

Our purpose is to alleviate suffering in the feral population through education and T.N.R.

Our intent is to be available, when possible, to assist individuals and business with

sterilization for community and domestic cats.

FELINE INFECTIOUS PERITONITIS (FIP)

FIP is caused by infection with a virus known as feline coronavirus. Coronaviruses are a common group of viruses that often infect the upper respiratory tract  (nose and throat) or gastrointestinal tract (intestines) in different animals. FIP if left untreated  can be 100% fatal. If caught and treated early your chances will increase to win the battle.

Early interventions is crucial for FIP, as untreated cases are universally fatal.

The Two Different Typs of FIP

  • Wet Form

    • Also called effusive, this form causes fluid to build up in the abdomen and/or chest.  This can lead to a swollen abdomen, difficulty breathing, and other serious problems.

  • Dry Form

    • Also called non-effusive, this form causes inflammatory cells to accumulate in organs like the brain, eyes, liver, or kidneys. This can lead to neurological symptoms like seizures or balance issues or eye symptoms.

Trap - Neuter - Return

This is a humane and effective approach for stray and feral cats.  T.N.R. improved the lives of feral cats improved their relationships with the people who live near them, and decreased the sizes of colonies over time.

VACCINATIONS

Vaccinations are given to prevent disease, not as a treatment for sick cats.  They are divided into core and non core categories.  All cats should receive core vaccines, which are the ones that guard against common and/or severe contagious diseases.

*Note: Core FVRCP vaccines need to be administered in 2-4 week intervals.  If you go beyond this time frame you must start the series over.

You Have a Colony of Cats. How do You Start TNR?

Step 1: Pick up a few traps from Tractor Supply or come get a few loaners from our facility M-F 3pm-6pm, only if you intended to do the work within a few weeks.. we really prefer you to buy a few of your own.

We advise that you have a vehicle or reliable transportation to make it easy on you and ourselves. Those who do not have a reliable ride must post asking for help with their own transportation.  You will need to make a post in our Facebook Group asking for help with major cross streets of where the pick up will be, so people who are close to you may be more available. Drop offs will be at the Fresno T.N.R. facility.

Plan ahead!!!

Step 2: Once you have your plan in place you can message an admin to be added to the colony chat, (this is in Facebook Messenger and can only be done by request)  YOU MUST HAVE TRAPS AND TRANSPORT IN ORDER TO PROCEED!!

Once in the chat we will open trapping at any given time.  When we open the trapping, go trap with the following rules:

Do not trap on a Friday or weekend unless you are prepared to hold and care for that cat!!!

Once cats are trapped you must be able to properly care for them!

  • Think of the trap location and do not let cats get possibly rained on or left in direct sunlight.

  • Hold them safe and clear from bad weather and keep them safe from the elements.

  • If held for more than 24 hours please feed and water them.

  • A helpful tip would be to leave the trap on top of a puppy pad for easy clean up.

  • Cover the cat to reduce stress and keep them from harming themselves.

  • Keep us informed on what you have trapped so we can keep count.

Step 3: When cats are dropped off, you MUST pick-up and properly care for the cats until they are safe and awake to be released. Some vet's sedation varies and it’s on you to keep the cats safe.

ALL cats will receive an eartip.

No soft carriers!!!

Cats MUST be in humane traps and secure with zip ties.

When we give permission to trap it is the trappers responsibility to drop-off and pick-up the cat. When we announce they are ready, be prepared to pick-up the cat.  It may be as late at 8pm. We cannot hold unless previously discussed and approved. We will not hold often.

If sponsors are needed, please take photos of the cats and create a post in our Facebook Group asking for sponsors (only AFTER cats are dropped off for spay with Fresno T.N.R.). Sponsors will comment on your Facebook Group post how many cats they will sponsor and send payment to Fresno T.N.R. with your name/colony in the message. Also, please pay what you can, it costs us roughly $75 per cat depending on facility we use, and yes we pay this ourselves, it is not free.

Pregnant cats get priority so remember to always attach pictures.

If you are using a harbor freight or Amazon trap ZIP TIE!

NEVER transport in the back of an open truck.

NEVER LEAVE TRAPS UNATTENDED
